Synopsis

October 1991. Shocking headlines in Russian newspapers: a possibility of a nuclear strike on Kyiv is seriously discussed in Moscow. Also back in June 1991, a classified CIA report described four scenarios for the future of the USSR, one of them envisaged the collapse of the Evil Empire and a nuclear Apocalypse. The KGB saw the scenario of the future as a possible action plan. Both the US president and the KGB head had the same fear. Though, the US regarded Gorbachev as a solution, whereas the KGB considered him as a problem. In August 1991, mutineers isolated Gorbachev and brought the tanks to the streets of Moscow under the slogans of salvaging the USSR.

The clanking of tank tracks pinned the attention of the world to the events undergoing in the world's nuclear capital. This puzzle had been missing several important fragments for 30 years: what prompted the rebels to actions that moved the avalanche of the events burying the USSR?
